Babies and Bunting and Bunnies, Oh My!

19 Aug 2013 / 0 Comments / in Crochet, Knitting/by Chic-a

Nothing adds a sweet, personal touch to a nursery like handmade items—especially when the items are knitted or crocheted. “Snuggly” goes hand-in-hand with nurseries, and what could be snugglier than soft knitted things?

Whether you’re decorating your own nursery, helping a friend, trying to think of baby shower gift ideas, or simply like cute eye candy, here are a few of my favorite knitted and crocheted nursery item ideas.

How Knitting Got Me Through My Divorce

15 Aug 2013 / 0 Comments / in Knitting/by Chic-a

When Rin Simpson learned to knit in junior high school, she never dreamed that it would one day help her get through one of the hardest times of her life.

“Knitting was something old ladies did,” she says. “I wouldn’t have dreamed of admitting that I knew what to do with a pair of size 5s and a 50g ball of extra chunky.”

As it turns out, though, Rin would eventually get extremely familiar with all aspects of knitting.

Married right out of college to her best friend, whom she was passionate about, made plans with, and loved very much. In the beginning, things were smooth. They had their bad moments just like any other couple, but for the most part, their marriage was good.

However, an unfortunate change began to overtake Rin and her husband’s lives. Their fights grew worse. Silences got longer. They grew more distant. When he took a job 100 miles away from their home, Rin found herself inside an empty house nearly every day.

After trying to adapt by keeping herself busy with chores, friends, movies, and projects, Rin began to find herself focusing on negative things: why her husband hadn’t called, why they had to fight constantly, how lonely she was. The hours of silence started to weigh down on her.

Then one night, she decided she’d start to knit.

“Something strange happened,” Rin says. “As I cast on and began the… Read more →

With all the down time on movie sets, plane rides, and unfamiliar hotel rooms, it’s no wonder that celebrities have embraced the calming practice and creative outlet of knitting. Here are just a few familiar faces who love it as much as we do.

10 Favorite Etsy Knitting Shops

11 Aug 2013 / 2 Comments / in Crochet, Fun things in the Knitting World, Knitting/by Chic-a

Nothing like a big dose of inspiration! Etsy is always a playground for incredible knit and crochet creations, but over the past week, I’ve been finding more and more shops that are so amazing. Not only are the pieces and patterns incredible, but it seems most of the shop owners are personally comforted by knitting and crocheting, which makes their work even better.

Here are my top ten favorite knitting/crocheting shops on Etsy.

The Knit Kid - Etsy

The Knit Kid is a Berlin-based shop that sells high-quality knitwear pieces. These colorful, striking tops and dresses are knitted by fashion design graduate Sabrina Weigt. “My business is 100% me,” she says. “I’m unique, and therefore my business is, too.” Unique and impressive.

The Velvet Acorn - Etsy

The Velvet Acorn sells the MOST ADORABLE kids’ hat, scarf, and hood patterns. Shop owner Heidi May is inspired by both nature and her children, and it comes across perfectly in her pattern designs: earthy tones, flowers and leaves everywhere. Not to mention the super-cute animal hoods. I also love the chic, slouchy hats. “There is just something about wrapping up in a wonderfully handmade item,” Heidi May says. I couldn’t agree more.

Andy Ve Eirn - Etsy

Andy Ve Eirn is owned by Yael Scharaby, who graduated with a degree in textile design and a specialty in knitting. Her stunning knit pieces for adults are perfectly crafted, I am in love with them! She’s been a featured seller on Etsy, and was also showcased on The Martha Stewart Show. I think she will go far. Read more →

Knitting in Movies

21 Jun 2013 / 1 Comment / in Crochet, Fun things in the Knitting World/by Shelley Chesney

Ever heard of the KNIFTA’S? We hadn’t either, until we decided to do a little research in honor of this year’s theme at the TNNA in Ohio: “Lights, Camera, Action!” Knitting in movies, film and television doesn’t get much recognition, but at iknit.org.uk, they honor and award the best scenes in film and television! We love it! And we think you will, too.

KNITFA, kind of like the BAFTA’s, stands for Knitting in Film and Television Awards.

One of their winners, (and a personal favorite), for Funniest knitting/crochet scene is Jack McBrayer in 30 Rock. Hilarious. Wonder if he’ll be wearing that later?!

More Knitting in Movies

Some other movies we had forgotten about until now, that include knitting scenes, are listed below:

Wallace & Gromit
We love that Gromit knits, instead of talking. Must help with the frustration of  having a daft owner while being so clever! He always looks so suspicious…

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Of course, this is with the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, where she says, “I have a strange feeling that the blueprints and my knitting instructions got switched. It’s not impossible I’m knitting a ranch house.”  When impossible instructions meet the beginner knitter, disaster is about to ensue. Or be hilarious. Or both.

What about you?

In light of all of this movie talk, we’d love to know, what’s your favorite movie?  (doesn’t have to include knitting in movies! 🙂
