Patty Nance & Stitches West

24 Feb 2014 / 0 Comments / in News & Updates/by Joanna - Chic-a Founder

Chic-a had the privilege and honor of hosting author and knitwear designer Patty Nance at Stiches West last week. It was wonderful doing the show with such a talented lady!

Patty is the creator of the Bargello knitting technique. If you’ve never heard of Bargello, you may not be alone—she created the new technique in 2005. In her own words, the creation of the technique came about “by trial and error. Fueled by dissatisfaction with a knitting project, I found that using short-repeating multi-colored yarns in an unintended manner results in a technique that, to my knowledge, has not been done before.” We love that! She took yarn she loved, but didn’t like the look of the knitted fabric…and found a way to make it beautiful! Bargello knitting is super interesting, beautiful, and can be applied not only to knitting, but needlework as well.

Patty says that Bargello knitting “tames the unpredictable beauty of variegated yarns. The colorwork technique uses the power of self-striping yarns to create brilliant color patterns in knitted garments and accessories.”

Patty Nance has a robust pattern library on Ravelry, and she often guest creates for the likes of Louet and Knitter’s magazine. Her extensive creativity and skill is astounding. She has a great history with Chic-a, and actually helped co-design our very useful and versatile Knittenger bag, which was on sale at Stitches West.

Below are a few examples of Patty’s Bargello technique. You can grab a copy of her book here.

Shauna Richardson’s CrochetdermyⓇ

13 Feb 2014 / 1 Comment / in Crochet/by Chic-a

“Crocheting is good to help you calm down and switch off,” says British artist Shauna Richardson. “The amount of things you can do with it…it’s extremely versatile. It can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be.”

Shauna is a well-known, widely regarded artist who has been exhibited all over the UK. She has invented the term “crochetdermy” to describe her unique body of work—realistic, life-sized, crocheted animal sculptures designed to resemble taxidermy.

She began crocheting when she was nine. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t free-styling with wool and hook,” she says. “Crochet is a useful tool for sculpting. I think it’s great for people of all ages and abilities.”

As someone who began crocheting just as a normal skill, Shauna Richardson has proven that even the simplest hobby can be turned into a platform to express yourself artistically and loudly. Once again, knitting and crochet storm the art world.

Retro for New Tech

02 Feb 2014 / 0 Comments / in Uncategorized/by Chic-a

So crazy about these clever little iPhone and camera cases!

Hand-stitched by artist Hine Mizushima, these cases reflect retro styles—rotary phones, old-school cameras—but will hold your new technology.

“Thinking of the color combinations for the felt, thread, and buttons is a very important and enjoyable part of my creations,” Hine says. “I make the cases by myself, with needles and thread, from start to finish, and I’m a slow crafter, so it takes long time to make them.”

Hine, who was born and raised in Japan but now lives in Vancouver, is a crafter, designer, illustrator, needle felter, and stop-motion artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. She has also created several official music videos for the band They Might Be Giants.

“I really love materials like felt, wool, yarn, and patterned fabrics and papers,” Hine says. “When I’m not making new items for my shop, I’m usually working on felt sculptures for exhibitions, or illustrations, or stop-motion videos. I hope my work can make people smile.”

As an artist who works through various mediums and has traveled the world, Hine is a great example of a crafter who has many outlets and tries new things. Her advice to crafters?

“Try to make things that you love, and make things that nobody else has ever made! Take beautiful photographs of your work, with sunlight and love!”

Swants

05 Jan 2014 / 0 Comments / in Fun things in the Knitting World, Knitting/by Chic-a

Thinking about one last amazing winter project? If so, look no further. We present to you…

SWANTS!

Behold the mighty patterns, the warm thighs, and the mind-blowing style of these babies. Swants, also known as sweater pants, are quite the fashion statement. You can thank knitting mastermind Stephen West of Amsterdam for this blessing.

Stephen (who travels around teaching knitting workshops) says, “The time has come for Swants! Your booty deserves to be just as warm as your torso!”

Check out westknits.com for a full tutorial on how to make Swants, and bear in mind their warning: “It will probably take a few tries before you master the art of Swantsing. Pick a sweater you are not emotionally attached to for your first pair.”

Let your legs have their day! Good luck!
