Good News & Knitting
Time is of the Essence
The kids at this school in Glasgow are pairing up with “experienced” knitters for a positive new way for generations to spend time together. The project is aptly called “Stitch Through Time” and here, they can chat while they work on knitting squares, which are then used for creating teddy bears or blankets. They are literally getting “knitted together” (pardon the pun!).
“The project is seen as a positive way to provide a structure and a sense of purpose to older people’s week — while also giving a unique, social outlet for older and younger generations to mix together,” says the Glasgow South and Eastwood Extra.
It is so amazing when these age groups get vitally connected, as the generation gap seems to grow larger every year. For some kids, their grandparents are far away, or are no longer around, and this offers a chance to enrich their lives with history and stories while expanding their communication skills and dexterity. For the elderly, these activities help them feel useful, keeps their minds sharp, and offers them meaningful ways to spend their days. Many older folk live on their own, and without these kind of activities, they can become very depressed and lonely, decreasing their quality of life, and shortening their life expectancy.
People of all ages benefit from knitting, we all know, and now it comes with the added benefits of the generations getting to know each other. We think its a clever pairing of these activities, with great results.
